Our Aim

“Ensuring Vocational skills and employment opportunities for young people with disabilities in the age group of 16 to 35 years through capacity building and networking with both government and private systems in the four districts of Karnataka (Bijapur, Davangere, Chikkaballapur and Bangalore Urban)”

Approach

The above objective is translated into effective programmes on the ground through a five pronged approach that includes:

  1. Institutional Services
  2. Resource Support to Organizations
  3. Capacity Building
  4. Networking
  5. Scholarship

The framework of the livelihood programme stretches from identification and assessment through training, rehabilitation and placement services:

Working in this exigent scenario, The District livelihood initiatives reachalmost 6282 youth over last three years of whom 1838 are trained and at least 1000 realize opportunities for financial independence

10 preparatory workshops were conducted for 230 youth who were given inputs on opportunities higher education and vocational skills training and to access government schemes. 61 youths were supported through two short term foundation courses 25- persons were provided placement and 36 were assisted to self-employment by availing loans through private agencies. 97 persons were assisted in applying for self-employment loans offered by the District Industry Centre and NHFDC.

We had conducted orientation input sessions for local stake holders including parents, oriented on Disability, its management, Disability Act, and provisions for inclusion of PWDs for higher/ vocational skills training and in work force. These sessions are also emphasized on allocation of resources form the concerned department including City Municipal corporations for ensuring livelihood opportunity for PWDs.

The program created lot of awareness in municipalities and Panchyaths of our working area, on issues of support and empower PWDs on higher/ vocational skills education & livelihood opportunities. The awareness raising programs triggered many policy level changes on higher education, vocational skills training and inclusion in employment for people with disabilities

Key Impacts

  1. State Director of welfare of differently able and senior citizen introduced the Scheme of Placement cell where youth with disability can enroll for their skill assessment and get placement support.
  2. Job identification committee is reformed on to identify department wise job vacancy and take stock of backlog for PWDS
  3. Disability act commissioner proactively played role in bringing the stay order from the court for not having the reservation.
  4. State government took decision to increase district disability rehabilitation Center in all the district of Karnataka National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation (NHFDC) nominated us as selection panel committee member for the finance aid support to PWDs in setting up Self entrepreneurship and scholarship for higher education.
  5. State Government has 3 to 5% reservations employment for PWDs. during this year 13780 post job notification is released out of this 375 posts are reserved for PWDs. This has disseminated to individual PWDs in projected areas, DPOs & NGOs
