While serving the Karnataka Welfare Association for the Blind (KWAB), between 1986 and 1999, he was responsible for establishing two Rural Community Based projects for persons with disability He has been working for the cause of disability for the past 25 years and spearheaded the establishment of two rural projects for Karnataka Welfare Association for the Blind (KWAB).
Basavaraju, joined APD in 1992, has head of Urban community programmes and developed programmes for persons with disability living in urban slums of Bangalore, with the focus of inclusion and empowering individuals and their families to meet their needs within their own communities. This Programme grew fast into one of the largest initiatives of the organization and in the Urban Slums of Bangalore.
He had the opportunity to share his learning in several national\International forums on the various issues concerning the development of disability sector in several seminars and conferences held in India as well other countries, including UK, Sweden, Netherlands, South Africa and Australia
His interest and commitment enabled him to found an organization of organizations, as its Founder Secretary, “Disability NGOs Alliance [DNA]” as registered Society. DNA aims to build the enabling environment and unified voice for the growth of the Disability sector, though its engagement with Government and Civil Society Organizations for ensuring just equitable opportunities for PwDs in the country.
Heading APD since 1997, Mr. Basavaraju presently working as an Executive Director- Strategy/ RSO & Advocacy/District Management - provides strategic direction, to ensure that APD realizes its articulated mission.
